Yesterday was our Gift Day and Joel preached from 1 Samuel 30:9-31 under the heading of “Gospel Shaped Life”. In the passage we see half of David’s army unwilling to share the spoils of their recent triumph with the other half that were too tired to go with them and fight.
David, however, knows that everything they have, and have won, is not theirs but merely a gift from God. David had previously got himself in a complete mess and it was purely by God’s Grace that his situation turned round and He gave them back what they had lost.
As Christians, we can be grateful we don’t get “what’s fair” – because what we deserve is God’s punishment for our sin. Instead, through Jesus Christ, we know Grace. From the air in our lungs to our eternity with Him, everything we have is a gift from God. Knowing that, we are free to be generous and extend this Grace to others.
