Evangelism
We are committed to preaching the gospel as it is the power of God for salvation (Romans 1:16).
But we understand the expression ‘preaching the gospel’ to mean a wide range of activities: serving the community; gossiping the good news; establishing friendship with those with whom we come into daily contact; as well as sketchboard messages in the streets, recruiting people to Alpha, Kidz Klub, having a significant presence on University campus, and our Sowing and Harvesting events at the Clarendon Centre.
So we seek to present the truth of Jesus in ways which engage the attention of those outside the church. We recognise that Jesus is the Rock of offence (1 Peter 2:8), but we do our best to make sure that any offence is based on the Lord Jesus, not on our ways of presenting him!
Loving people, befriending them and seeking to serve them is surely the way that the Lord Jesus himself used to build a bridge, establishing opportunities to share with them the truth about their souls’ state and their desperate need for a Saviour.

Hearing the gospel by words and by actions
Families and friends of baptismal candidates attend Baptism services, and we work hard to invite guests to special events such as New Creation, Hope of the City and other meetings where the gospel is preached and healing prayer is featured.
We also have Quiz Nights and Christmas concerts and similar low-key events which have a Christian flavour without being meetings with appeals for salvation. The entire Urban Impact project, featuring the Greenleas Festival and our programme of social action, is designed to serve the community, provide a link for people to ask questions and to consider the kindness of God in the context of his people being a demonstration and example. |
